General Hiking
- The ESC is an ideal base for
general hiking and for training and expeditions which
contribute to award schemes as the International Award and
the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
- Excellent hiking territory
exists nearby in the Akamas peninsula (forest and
wilderness with good footpath network), locally to the
villages in the Laona area (mixed wilderness and
agricultural land, very good track and path network), further north and east in the mountains of Paphos Forest and
in the foothills of the mountains.
- The whole area has interesting
and varied terrain with many spectacular views and and
abundance of natural and cultural interest. The varied topography and
strongly developed relief make it challenging territory in
terms both of the walking and the navigation.
- Good maps are available,
including modern Ordnance Survey type maps at 1:50 000 scale
and slightly outdated, but very detailed plans at 1:5 000.
- The ESC can usually provide
vehicle back-up, or can arrange hire of 4WD vehicles as
necessary. We do not, at present, have stocks of camping
equipment.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards
- The personnel of the ESC are
themselves experienced in outdoor activities and qualified
in first-aid. We are experienced in both training and assessment
processes. Training can focus on development of any or all
of the essential skills of map work and navigation, route
planning, overall expedition planning, hiking skills and
camping skills
