The Environmental
Studies Centre (ESC) is located in a restored primary school in the
village of Kritou Terra, which is on the Laona plateau
within the proposed Akamas National Park at the western tip of the
island of Cyprus.

Students visit the
ESC from schools and colleges as far dispersed as the Middle East
and Western Europe, as well as from within Cyprus. Those
from the local area make day-visits, whilst groups from other
parts of Cyprus or from overseas stay for up to two weeks in
restored village houses. Visiting groups can follow a number of
activities, ranging from practical conservation
work, through
hiking expeditions and training, to pure environmental education
(including courses for adults and
families).
The Cyprus ESC is
the first and probably the only centre for practical environmental
education or "field studies" on the island of Cyprus.
Groups of students of all ages come to study ecology, geography, tourism and other
environmental subjects appropriate to the area, following
programmes from 1 to 10 days in length. Course programmes are
designed to meet the needs of individual groups, based always on
the principle that there is no better classroom to learn about
nature and the landscape than the countryside itself.
The
ESC represents the main educational activity of the
Terra Cypria, a registered charity concerned with
raising environmental awareness throughout Cypriot Society.
